NordiCHI 2024 is committed to providing an inclusive environment
and we will do our best to accommodate requests for special assistance.
This page describes the accessibility features of NordiCHI 2024, to
help you make an informed decision about whether the conference will be
accessible to you. Please contact us if your question is not answered
here, or if the conference arrangements as described are not enough to
allow you to attend. We will work with you to the best of our ability,
to make the conference accessible.

How do I communicate accessibility needs to NordiCHI 2024 organizers?
The Accessibility Chair for NordiCHI 2024 aims to ensure the conference is accessible to everyone. When you register for the conference, there will be a registration question labeled “To enable us to cater to your needs during the conference, we would appreciate information about any special needs you might have regarding the conference venue. For example, if you need an elevator, hearing loop, etc. Please indicate if you have special dietary requests, and specify (Vegetarian, Vegan, Pescatarian, Lactose free, Gluten free, Other.) If other: Please specify other dietary requests.”. In your response, please indicate any accessibility needs such as wheelchair access, sign language interpretation, or a guide. The Accessibility Chair will follow up with you to clarify your needs. You can contact them directly at any time by emailing nordichi2024@akademikonferens.se.

Will sign language interpretation or captioning be available?
The conference will provide a team of sign language interpreters or captioners if requested by any attendees
during the early registration period. Please make your request as early as possible. Our Accessibility Chair
will follow up with you to discuss your needs in more detail. After October 6, 2024 (the deadline for early
registration), a best effort will be made to accommodate requests, but we cannot guarantee that interpreters or
captioners will be available.
What are the taxi and public transport options for getting to the conference venue?
From Stockholm-Arlanda International Airport you can take a taxi, bus, or train to Uppsala.
Recommended options for getting to the conference include:
Bus Arlanda – Uppsala
Bus line 801 runs between Arlanda and central Uppsala throughout the day. The journey takes about 45 minutes.
You can by a ticket with a credit card on the bus, as cash is not accepted. There are also vending machines
at Arlanda airport terminals 2, 4 and 5 where you can buy a one-way ticket for the bus with credit cards,
only.

Train Arlanda – Uppsala
Trains leave Stockholm Arlanda Airport for Uppsala Central Station directly from SkyCity next to Terminal 5.
The journey time takes about 20 minutes. Tickets can be purchased at the ticket desk in SkyCity.For timetable and ticket fares: SJ
Taxi Arlanda – Uppsala
Taxi are available directly outside of all terminals. The journey to Uppsala takes about 30 minutes. The cost is approximately of SEK 495. Make sure to ask the driver for a fixed price in advance. You can pay by credit card or by cash. You can make advance reservation with:

Local bus
The easiest way to get to the Universitetshuset is to travel by local bus. Many local UL buses and trains
have ramps or lifts that can take wheelchairs on board. Here you can find
information on the possibilities and limitations.
Parking
Please note that there are very few parking spots available outside the University Main Building. Parking is
not allowed except in designated areas around the building.
Who can I ask about accessibility in Uppsala, Sweden?

Can a student volunteer assist me during the conference?
Student volunteers will be available to assist attendees with disabilities with navigation, meal service, or
other accessibility needs. If you will need volunteer assistance at the conference, please indicate this on your
conference registration form.
Attendees who require personal care assistance should bring their own assistant. Personal care assistants do
not need to register for the conference. Please contact the accessibility chairs if you are bringing a personal
care assistant.
What is the conference space like?
Uppsala University Main Building (“Universitetshuset”) can be found in central Uppsala, with street address
Biskopsgatan 3, 753 10 Uppsala. It is within walking distance from the hotels we recommend.
The main entrance is at the front of the building. Accessible entrance is available at the back of the building,
from Övre Slottsgatan 7D. This door is open during business hours. You can also contact the staff using the
intercom. As you enter the accessible entrance you will see the sign to the lift. The scientific program will
take place on both the ground floor (first floor) and on the second floor of the building. The majority of the
halls used at the conference are equipped with hearing loops. Small portable wireless hearing loops are
available upon request to use in all halls, please contact us to find out more.

Will the conference be accessible by wheelchair or power scooter?
Yes, the conference will be accessible to wheelchair users.
There is an elevator in the building, and no stages in the presentation rooms.

What are the restroom facilities like?
Toilets are located on one level below ground floor and on the second floor. Accessible toilets are located on
the first floor.
What are the arrangements for presenters with accessibility needs?
There are special places allocated for wheelchairs in the front seating.
Poster sessions will have space for a wheelchair to move between the posters.
There is an elevator in the building, and no stages in the presentation rooms.

Can I bring my guide dog?
Yes.
Can I attend the conference by robot?
We are sorry, but NordiCHI 2024 will not be able to accommodate remote attendance by robot.
How much walking or standing will be needed?
The walking demands of the conference and offsite events are moderate.

Will there be an induction loop in the meeting rooms?
The majority of the rooms have induction loops.
Will speakers and audience members asking questions be using a microphone?
Yes, microphones will be used for all speakers. Attendees with questions will be requested to use a microphone so that their question is more easily heard.
What food service will be provided?
The conference will provide meals including coffee breaks with sandwiches, snacks or fruit (10.30-11 and 15.30-16), and drinks and finger foods at the welcome reception.
The conference dinner consists of a 3 course meal.
The conference can accommodate special dietary needs but this needs to be specified in the registration form. If someone registers late or on the day of the conference, we can not.
Dishes will be labeled. If you have special dietary needs, please indicate these clearly on your registration form.
Can the conference accommodate special dietary needs?
Yes. Attendees who indicate special dietary requirements on their registration form will be provided with
special meals when the conference catering does not accommodate them. If you have a severe allergy please
indicate this on your registration form.
Will the conference be a smoke-free environment?
The entire indoor portion of the conference venue is a non-smoking area. Sweden has a non-smoking policy, including smoking is prohibited in public buildings.
Will there be loud music, strobe lighting, spotlights, or other strong sensory experiences?
Participants are requested not to use flash photography or to wear strong scents. Please indicate on your registration form if there are specific items you would like to know about in advance.
Some demos may use spotlights or strong lights.

Will there be a designated quiet space at the conference?
We hope to be able to provide a quiet space at the conference. Please contact us if you are planning to attend the conference and may need such a space.
What if I have a medical emergency or health problem during the conference?
In case of emergency call 112 for an ambulance. The nearest hospital is Akademiska sjukhuset, located 3 km from the conference venue.The Uppsala University Main Building has two defibrillators. If you require non-urgent medical care dial 1177 or contact nordichi2024@akademikonferens.se or ask any student
volunteer. They will provide you with information about local doctors, specialists, chiropractors, etc.
