Workshops and Tutorials

NordiCHI 2024 welcomes proposals for workshops and tutorials as spaces for debate and co-development of ideas and approaches related to the advancement of research and practice within the field of Human-Computer Interaction. Workshops and tutorials can take place either in person or online.

Accepted workshops and tutorials should aim to attract 10-25 participants. Workshops run for either a half day or a full day, with scheduled morning, lunch and afternoon breaks. Tutorials can run 1 or 3 hours in length (morning or afternoon session). Workshops and tutorials will run as pre-conference activities on October 12th (online workshops and tutorials) and October 13th (both physical and online workshops and tutorials). NordiCHI 2024 will be a physical and online  conference and will take place at UppsalaUniversity, Uppsala, Sweden.

What is a workshop?

NordiCHI 2024 welcomes proposals for workshops as spaces for debate and co-development of ideas and approaches related to the advancement of research and practice within the field of Human-Computer Interaction. Participants prepare in advance to share perspectives, knowledge, and interest in the workshop theme. The outcomes of workshops include heightened sensitivity to new issues, joint publications and research programs and critical yet friendly feedback on emerging ideas. Often, they establish or solidify research networks and contribute to community building.

Successful workshop proposals for NordiCHI 2024 should make full use of the workshop format,  avoiding conference-style paper presentations and prioritising debate and joint action by using more experimental formats.  Proposals that reach out to other disciplines and traditions, and to industry, art, activism, and other practices to advance constructive and critical discussions are welcome. Successful proposals clearly explain the aim and relevance of the workshop, intended audience, planned activities, format, expected outcomes and impact for the intended community.

This said we invite proposals for workshops focusing on all themes related to the field of Human-Computer Interaction. In particular, we invite workshops focusing on the theme of the conference: Uniting HCI for a Hyperlocal and Global Experience. The accepted workshops, if planned in person, will run in the university lecture or meeting rooms, the size of which is determined by the number of registered participants.  It is also possible to run workshops and tutorials as part of the NordiCHI’24 online program.

What is a tutorial?

Tutorials offer practitioners, students and researchers the opportunity to extend their knowledge into new areas of expertise and to learn about specific concepts, methods and techniques from recognized field experts. A tutorial may be 1 or 3 hours in length (morning or afternoon session) including scheduled breaks. The NordiCHI 2024 conference would like to offer a wide variety of tutorials for researchers, practitioners, designers, developers, managers and students.

We invite proposals for tutorials focusing on all themes of the Human Computer Interaction field, and in particular, we invite tutorials focusing on the theme of the conference: Uniting HCI for a Hyperlocal and Global Experience. We encourage instructors to propose tutorials on new and emerging areas, methods and technologies, or to experiment with new forms of instruction and innovative perspectives in an HCI context. We also welcome proposals for tutorials on foundational themes of HCI.

The accepted tutorials, if planned in person, will run in the university lecture or meeting rooms, the size of which is determined by the number of registered participants. We can generally provide a projector and screen.  Additional technical requirements must be discussed with the chairs.  It is also possible to run workshops and tutorials as part of the NordiCHI’24 online program.

Submission Instructions and Schedule

Submissions should NOT be anonymised. See submission instructions for details on how to submit. Submissions can be up to four pages long (excluding references) in the ACM standard single-column format.

Workshop submissions should be self-contained and clearly provide a detailed description including:

• • Title of the workshop
  • Names and affiliations of the organizers
  • An abstract describing the aims, objectives, benefits and significance of the proposed workshop
  • A scheduled overview of planned activities and format
  • Link to a draft of the call for participation
  • The promotional strategy, detailing how the organizers plan to recruit and select participants
  • Organizers’ background, provided as short biographical notes
  • Plans for a half day or a full day program, in person or online
  • If in person workshop, on site requirements (e.g. seats arrangements, materials, etc.)

Tutorial submissions should be self-contained and clearly provide a detailed description including:

• • Title of the tutorial
  • Names and affiliations of the organizers
  • An abstract describing the aims, objectives, benefits and significance of the proposed tutorial
  • A scheduled overview of planned activities and format
  • Prerequisites / level; skills and knowledge the attendees will gain as a result of attending the tutorial
  • The promotional strategy, detailing how the organizers plan to recruit and select participants
  • Organizers’ background, provided as short biographical notes
  • Tutorial program and duration, in person or online
  • If in person tutorial, on site requirements (e.g. seats arrangements, materials, etc.)

Selection Process

The selection process is curated. Workshop and tutorial selection will happen by the discretion of the Workshop and Tutorials Chairs. Acceptance of proposals will be informed by factors such as:

• Clarity of intended outcomes
• Value for the participants
• Level of expected interest
• Impact and relevance to the NordiCHI’s broad audience
• Profile of the organizers

Accepted workshop descriptions will be included in the ACM Digital Library as part of the NordiCHI Adjunct Proceedings. Participant contributions are not published. Participants of accepted workshops must register for the conference.

Additional conditions

Although accepted workshops and tutorials will be announced through the NordiCHI 2024 website, workshop organisers must set and circulate a call for workshop participation through appropriate channels and establish a website for the workshop no later than July 1.

Please note that the period between the notification of acceptance and the required public announcement is short, so plan accordingly.

Workshop participants are selected by the organisers of the workshop, based on criteria set by the organisers. Typically, potential participants submit a position paper, stating their contribution, interest and expertise related to the workshop. NordiCHI 20242 encourages workshop organisers to experiment with submission formats.

The possible publication of workshop participants contributions is the sole decision and responsibility of the workshop organisers.

Workshops and tutorials are run with at least 5 participants registered by the early bird registration deadline so organisers should be active in promoting the workshop to relevant audiences.
